Penang Taxis are supposed to operate with meters at the rate of RM1.60 flag down and 10 sens per kilometre. However, many taxis do not use the meters and passengers have to bargain before boarding. It is actually illegal for the taxis not to use meters - high time Malaysian authorities review the low rates and increase the rates to allow taxi operators to have a reasonable income ... and to enforce the use of meters.

BUSES

Bus fares are very reasonable and the bus consortium in Penang operate bus routes from the Ferry Terminal, most routes via Komtar, to most parts of Penang.

A free bus "loop service" within the city will operate from July 2001. This service operates from the Ferry Terminal to Komtar, passing through various destinations of the Penang Heritage Trial.
